New York Liberty hasn’t won a WNBA Finals game since September 4th, 1999, but that has come to an end after the Liberty defeated the Las Vegas Aces 87-73 on Sunday. Liberty was led by their All-Star forward Jonquel Jones who scored 27 points & and grabbed 8 rebounds. Their second-leading scorer was Breanna Stewart who hit 20 points. The Liberty went on an 8-0 run with 2:32 left in the 1st quarter, & a 7-0 run at the beginning of the 2nd quarter. Liberty also took a double-digit lead in the 3rd quarter; however, the Aces were not going to leave without a fight! Aces were able to cut the Liberty’s lead down to 6 points in the 4th quarter, but Breanna Stewart’s turnaround jump shot, & Betnijah’s layup made the Liberty lead go back up to 10 points.
A scary moment happened for the Aces midway through the 4th quarter as their All-Star Guard Chelsea Gray injured her foot and was taken to the locker room. Before being taken to the Locker room, Chelsea was seen on the bench yelling “My foot popped!” There are no updates on Chelsea’s injury, but let’s hope and pray for her speedy recovery. Kelsey Plum scored a playoff career-high 29 points. A’ja Wilson was the 2nd leading scorer for the Aces. She scored 16 points, & grabbed 11 rebounds, but that wasn’t enough to stop the Liberty’s offense. The Aces lead the series 2-1, & look to secure back-to-back championship wins on Wednesday, Oct 18th, at Barclay Center at 8 PM ET on ESPN.
