Sometimes a team just needs a moment to settle in and for the Indiana Fever, that moment came all at once Thursday night.
Kelsey Mitchell took over with 25 points, and She helped Indiana pull away after halftime, turning it into an 83–71 win over Atlanta. More than just a good start in the Commissioner’s Cup, it felt like the team hitting reset after a week that came with its share of distractions.
Mitchell was the calm in the middle of it all. When Atlanta briefly grabbed the lead in the third quarter, she answered with 11 straight points, shifting the energy back in Indiana’s favor almost instantly. She made it look simple knocking down shots, finding space, and keeping the offense flowing. By the end of the night, she also crossed the 5,000-point mark in her career, another quiet milestone for one of the league’s most reliable scorers.
Around her, the pieces clicked. Aliyah Boston brought her usual presence inside with 19 points and strong defense, while Caitlin Clark filled the stat sheet with 17 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. Clark didn’t force things she picked her spots, hit a couple of timely shots, and kept the offense organized.
And honestly, that balance stood out.
Coming into the game, the Fever had been giving up a lot of points. But this time, they looked more connected on defense rotating better, contesting shots, and making things uncomfortable for Atlanta. Holding the Dream to 71 points was easily one of their more complete defensive efforts this season.
Atlanta had its moments. Naz Hillmon’s three-pointer gave them a brief lead in the third, and players like Allisha Gray, Jordin Canada, and Angel Reese all contributed solid performances. But every time it felt like the Dream might build something, Indiana responded quickly and usually through Mitchell.
The win also comes after a week where the Fever had to address some internal tension, including a visible sideline moment between Clark and head coach Stephanie White. Whatever was said in their team meeting earlier this week seemed to help. The group looked more in sync, more focused, and more like a team that understands what it’s trying to be.
If this game is any indication, Indiana isn’t just defending a title they’re figuring themselves out in real time. And that can be just as important.
