Caitlin Clark put up 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists Friday night, and the Indiana Fever kept its streak going, beating the Portland Fire 112-98 for their fifth straight win.
Clark picked up her fourth career triple-double. Kelsey Mitchell matched her with 26 points, Indiana (19-10) won for the ninth time in 11 games, and the group has now scored at least 100 points in five straight.
This one turned in the third quarter. Indiana stretched the margin to 18 and carried a 90-72 lead into the fourth, then Makayla Timpson opened the final period with a layup that pushed it to 10 more. Portland made a push Bridget Carleton hit a 3-pointer to get the Fire within 98-88, then another basket cut it to 100-93, but the Fever kept answering. Clark knocked down free throws late, and that was that.
Carleton led Portland (11-18) with 26 points, while the Fire dropped their fourth in a row.
Cunningham walked into a loud building and heard about it right away. Portland was already worked up before tipoff, and when she checked in midway through the first quarter, the boos came fast. She didn’t spend time soaking it in. She knocked down a 3-pointer a few seconds later, gave the crowd something else to react to, and finished with 13 points.
The first half had some back-and-forth to it. Portland briefly grabbed a 36-30 lead, but Indiana clawed back and went into halftime up 56-47 with Clark already at 17 points.
The game drew a sellout crowd of 19,959, a Fire record, and it had the feel of a team getting a little too comfortable with its own scoring pace. Indiana kept the pressure on, and Portland never managed to get the stop it needed.
The Fever head to Minnesota on Sunday. The Fire host Los Angeles the same day.
